The rock tumbler can be used easily and quickly to clean and polish the handmade silver jewellery and its constituents. Many jewellery makers use white-collar tumbler models which are made by lortone. This is a metal based model which has an internal motor and two part metal lids with a soft barrel. When the machine is plugged in, the barrel turns.

There are also many different ways of tumble polishing used for sterling silver jewellery. Other methods can also be searched out through different internet sites which are especially designed for this purpose. Following are the few common instructions which should be followed by the designers to clean their jewellery.

The very first thing that should be followed, is the filling of barrel of jewellery tumbler about 1/3 with a clean stainless steel tumbling shot which can be easily purchased from jewellery making suppliers. The websites also provide information about tumbling shot. Enough water should be added to cover the tumbling shot and few drops of liquid detergent should be added too. There are different brands of detergents available but the most popular is the Dawn. Other brands are also good and are used by different jewellery makers. Then using fingers gently, jewellery should be pushed down into the tumbling shot. Only that much pieces of jewellery which can easily be polished and tangled, should be used. Tumbling one piece at one time is good because sometimes two pieces may be tangled up together. Tumbling more than two pieces like chains may cause damage.

Then the inner lid should be pushed up at the top which will cover the top of barrel with outer lid. There are different models available but the model which is being discussed requires to pushing the outer lid down which will make sure that it is working in its pure form. A metal washer is also used with the tumbler which comes with tumbler, when it was purchased. It fixes over the top of the barrel with a screw on the knurled nut made with plastic. It helps while the jewellery is being tumbled.

After that the barrel becomes ready to be placed onto the base of jewellery tumbler. Then the groove should be aligned on the knurled nut. And then the machine should be plugged in. There are different models of machine available in market which does not have the function of turning off and on so those should be used carefully.

Normally the jewellery tumbler should remain in working process from twenty to thirty minutes. When the machine tumbles the jewellery it aligns the molecules of silver so accurately that the silver becomes bright and its surface become reflective too. This process removes the defile and increases the stiffness of silver.

When the jewellery is ready to remove, first the machine should be unplugged and the barrel should be lifted off. Then the lid should be removed and the jewellery should be placed slowly onto the strainer. Strainer will allow removing the water quickly. When the whole barrel becomes empty then the hot jewellery components should pass through lukewarm or cold water which makes handling of jewellery easy.

Then the jewellery should be cleaned with a dry cloth. To make the silver jewellery tarnish free and shiny, it should be stored with a cloth or a box which is covered with anti tarnish cloth.
