The Taj Mahal in India is one of the wonders of the world and is one of the most beautiful mausoleums constructed by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his favorite queen, Mumtaz Mahal. Located in Agra, white marble is used in the creation of this symbol of love and is considered to be the pinnacle of the famous Mughal architecture.
Mumtaz Mahal was the second, and favorite, wife of Shah Jahan (r. 1628-1658). A Persian princess born as Arjuman Banu Begum, she was a significant influence in his life and in his policies. She died at age thirty-nine while giving birth to their fourteenth (some say thirteenth) child in 1631. The ruler went into deep mourning and much of his empire was compelled to do the same.
The interiors of the Taj Mahal display lapidary art using precious and semi-precious stones. The ceiling, intricately carved again with a sun motif is 25 meters high. "Jaali" work on the balcony walls permit the passage of sunlight into the interiors. The "jaali" screens which serve as the walls around the cenotaphs are finely carved.
There is an unmistakable aura that surrounds the Taj Mahal that makes it more than just an architectural wonder. Love went into creating every inch of carvings and with each precious stone set and all for an Emperor who lost his soul mate. The result has transformed a mausoleum into the world’s only monument to love. This is surely makes your India holidays a memorable one to cherish forever.
Besides the Taj Mahal, Agra is also famous for the Agra Fort, which is a veritable treasure trove of the Mughal architectural tradition. The Agra fort is built alongside the Yamuna River and stretches almost 2.5 km. The various buildings within this sprawling fort complex represent the assimilation of different cultures, which was the hallmark of the Mughals. The magnificent towers, bastions, ramparts, and gateways of the Agra Fort symbolize the stature and power of Mughal Emperor Akbar.
