Usually, though, you'll think of coordinating beforehand. There are some common beliefs about the impact color has on the price of the stone, that, for the most part, hold true when shopping.
The deeper the color of the stone, the more it's worth. For example, a dark red ruby is worth far more than a light blue aquamarine of a similar size. Vibrant tones are typically harder to come by, and rarity is increased as the richness of the color increases.
Don't think of "deeper" as "darker". An extremely dark gemstone is often worth less than its lighter hued siblings. This is because the appeal of rich colors is the way the light reflects in them. An extremely dark stone will not have the same internal illumination that a lighter color does. The best stones will have a rich, intense color that seems to glow from the inside. A stone that seems pale or lifeless isn't going to be worth very much, and it won't accessorize well.
Another thing to consider with colored gems is the quality of the color itself. Most gems have some natural variations in color, with tints of other primary colors. For example, an emerald may have veins that are more blue or yellow than green. Extremely valuable gems will have an all over consistent tone that reflects only one primary color. An emerald that is very green will be more desirable (and attractive) than one that has an underlying yellow hue.
When judging your gems, don't limit yourself to just color. Consider how the stone shines and reflects light, how smooth its surface is and if it looks "clean" to the naked eye. A gem can have an excellent color, but have a rough outside or a cloudy inside.
Knowing all this, before you go out to shop for gems, take a look at what you expect to wear it with. If you have a large budget, you can think of the traditional, expensive gems, like sapphires or rubies. If your budget is lower, you can consider paler colored varieties such as tourmaline or aquamarine. Having a good idea of what you want before you enter the store will save you time, energy and money.
