Milwaukee cordless drill grip has dissolved to mush, any idea why?

My cordless drill Milwaukee has (had) a layer of rubber on the grip. Over time (~ 8 years) this rubber has deteriorated completely, making a sticky dough is sticky. I had to scrape it off, otherwise, turn my hands black every time I use it. The exercise has not had a hard life, usually kept in its carrying case in my garage. Has anyone else experienced? I know a lot of tools have this type of grip so you have to work pretty well. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Chris
